This is the shortest run out of Marrakech that changes the scenery completely: 175 kilometres, and you go from a city at 40 °C to a harbour where the wind never drops. The route is simple and toll-free, and fits into half a day. What you still need to know is where to stop and where to slow down.

The route in detail

You leave Marrakech on Avenue Mohammed VI and pick up the N8 towards Chichaoua. Forty-five kilometres of dual carriageway: flat, dull and free of surprises. At Chichaoua, kilometre 75, you leave the N8 for the R207 to Essaouira. That is where the road changes: a single lane each way, gentle relief, bends, and a hundred kilometres of argan forest down to the coast.

Real driving time is 2 h 45 to 3 h. Do not plan for less. The R207 is a good road but you will spend part of it behind lorries and tour coaches, and the overtaking stretches are short. Leaving at 8 a.m. puts you in Essaouira before 11, which gives you the medina before the coaches arrive.

What the trip costs

Stops worth making

Chichaoua, km 75. Not for the town, for the filling stations. It is the last substantial refuelling point before the coast, with decent toilets and a café. Pumps thin out on the R207 and some do not carry 95 unleaded.

Argan oil cooperatives, km 110 to 150. There are a good twenty of them along the R207 and they are not equal. The ones displaying a women's cooperative name and a registration number genuinely press on site; the others resell oil bought elsewhere, often cut. A litre of genuine culinary argan oil does not go below 250 MAD. Cheaper than that and it is not pure.

Goats in the argan trees, around km 120. You will see them, they photograph well, and in most cases they are put up there and brought down at dusk. Someone will ask 20 to 50 MAD for the picture. Your call — but do not brake hard to stop: that is exactly where rear-end collisions happen on this road.

Ounara, km 155. Twenty kilometres from Essaouira the landscape opens up and the air turns noticeably cooler. That is the moment to close the windows and switch off the air conditioning.

What goes wrong on this road

Three things recur. First, mopeds without lights at dusk in the villages along the R207: if you are driving back in the evening, do 60 km/h through built-up areas, not 80. Second, mobile speed traps between Chichaoua and Smimou; the gendarmerie often sets up at the exit of a bend, at the bottom of a descent. Third, the Essaouira wind itself: over the final twenty kilometres, crosswind gusts push a light car sideways. Keep both hands on the wheel and leave room when passing lorries.

In winter, add rain. The R207 drains poorly in places and deep puddles form on the exit of bends. This is not a road to drive at night in heavy rain.

Once you arrive

Essaouira is a one-day walking town: the Skala ramparts, the fishing harbour, the listed medina, the beach out towards Diabat. The car is only needed to leave again, or to run down to Sidi Kaouki, fifteen kilometres south, where the beach is empty and the wind stronger still.

If you carry on south along the coast instead of returning to Marrakech, the N1 follows the Atlantic down to Agadir. That is another day's driving and another article: Marrakech to Agadir, the coast road or the motorway.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Marrakech to Essaouira?

Between 2 h 45 and 3 h for 175 kilometres, on the N8 to Chichaoua then the R207. Apps often say 2 h 30; that is optimistic, as the R207 is single-lane and you follow lorries on it.

Is there a toll between Marrakech and Essaouira?

No, the route is free throughout. There is no motorway to Essaouira; the N8 and R207 are national and regional roads without tolls.

Can Marrakech to Essaouira be done as a day trip?

Yes, and it is the usual arrangement: leave around 8 a.m., arrive before 11, drive back in the afternoon. Six hours of driving in total, leaving five or six hours on the spot.

Where do you park in Essaouira?

The medina is pedestrian. The guarded car parks at Bab Doukkala and the port charge 20 to 30 MAD a day. Leave nothing visible inside the car.

Before you take the road

For this route a city car is more than enough: there is no track and no serious gradient, and a small engine uses less over the hundred kilometres of R207.
